The original Little America is on route I-80 between Cheyenne and Salt Lake City…seemingly in the middle of nowhere. But it was this once desolate spot that the original founder of the hotel was once lost in a blizzard on a cold winter night, long ago. As he huddled next to the sheep he was tending, he dreamed of a haven there for travelers. A place with a warm fire crackling in a cozy fireplace, a comfortable bed, good food and a convivial atmosphere.
Years after his ordeal, he brought his dream to reality. Recalling his earlier hardships at that place, he felt kinship with the expedition of Admiral Byrd, isolated in Antarctica…so he named the spot in honor of their South Polar Camp, Little America.
From the original site, the chain has grown to include The Grand America Hotel and Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City; the elegant Westgate Hotel in San Diego…plus hotels in Wyoming and Flagstaff, Arizona; the Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah and the Sun Valley Resort in Sun Valley, Idaho.
